BOLIVIA
Bolivia is located in Central South
America, southwest of Brazil. The geographical coordinates are
17 00 S, 65 00 W and on a map it may be referenced in South America.
The total area of this great Latin
American country is approximately 1,098,580 sq. km and is divided
up into 1,084,390 sq. km land, and 14,190 sq. km water. Bolivia
is slightly less than three times the size of Montana. Its coastline
totals 0 km (landlocked) and the border it shares with five other
countries, is approximately 6,743 km. The border is shared with
Argentina (832 km), Brazil (3,400 km), Chile (861 km), Paraguay
(750 km), and Peru (900 km). Although Bolivia is landlocked, it
shares control of Lago Titicaca, the world's highest navigable
lake (elevation 3,805 m), with Peru.
The climate in Bolivia varies with
altitude, it is humid and tropical to cold and semiarid. The country's
terrain is rugged Andes Mountains with a highland plateau (Altiplano),
hills, lowland plains of the Amazon Basin. Elevation extremes
range from the lowest point (Rio Paraguay) 90 m above sea level,
to the highest point (Cerro Illimani) 6,882 m above sea level.
As of 1993 Bolivia had many natural
resources including, tin, natural gas, petroleum, zinc, tungsten,
antimony, silver, iron, lead, gold, timber. The land was broken
out in the following percentiles, 2% arable land; 0% permanent
crops; 24% permanent pastures; 53% forests and woodland; and 21%
other.
