Brazil is located in Eastern South
America, bordering the Atlantic Ocean. The geographical coordinates
are 10 00 S, 55 00 W and on a map it may be referenced in South
America.
The total area of this great Latin
American country is approximately 8,511,965 sq. km and is divided
up into 8,456,510 sq. km land, and 55,455 sq. km water (Includes
Arquipelago de Fernando de Noronha, Atol das Rocas, Ilha da Trindade,
Ilhas Martin Vaz, and Penedos de Sao Pedro e Sao Paulo).
Brazil is slightly smaller than
the US. Its coastline totals 7,491 km and the border it shares
with ten other countries, is approximately 14,691 km. The border
is shared with Argentina 1,224 km, Bolivia 3,400 km, Colombia
1,643 km, French Guiana 673 km, Guyana 1,119 km, Paraguay 1,290
km, Peru 1,560 km, Suriname 597 km, Uruguay 985 km, Venezuela
2,200 km.
Brazil is the largest country in
South America, and shares common boundaries with every South American
country except Chile and Ecuador. The climate is mostly tropical,
but is temperate in southern portion of the country.
The country's terrain is mostly
flat to rolling lowlands in north, with some plains, hills, mountains,
and narrow coastal belt. Elevation extremes range from the lowest
point (Atlantic Ocean) which is at sea level, to the highest point
(Pico da Neblina) 3,014 m above sea level. As of 1993, Brazil
had many natural resources including, bauxite, gold, iron ore,
manganese, nickel, phosphates, platinum, tin, uranium, petroleum,
hydropower, and timber. The land was broken out in the following
percentiles, 5% arable land; 1% permanent crops; 22% permanent
pastures; 58% forests and woodland; and 14% other.
