ECUADOR
Ecuador is located in Western South
America, bordering the Pacific Ocean at the Equator, between Colombia
and Peru.
The geographical coordinates are
2 00 S, 77 30 W and on a map it may be referenced with South America.
The total area of this beautiful Latin American country is approximately
283,560 sq. km and is divided up into 276,840 sq. km land, and
6,720 sq. km water (includes Galapagos Islands).
Ecuador is slightly smaller than
Nevada. Its coastline equals 2,237 km and the border it shares
with two other countries is approximately 2,010 km. It shares
its borders with Colombia (590 km), and Peru (1,420 km). Ecuador
is home to the Cotopaxi volcano located in the Andes, and is highest
active volcano in world.
The country has a tropical climate
along the coast, and becomes cooler inland. The country's terrain
is coastal plain (costa), inter-Andean central highlands (sierra),
and flat to rolling eastern jungle (oriente). Elevation extremes
range from the lowest point (Pacific Ocean) which is at sea level,
to the highest point (Chimborazo) 6,267 m above sea level.
As of 1993, had the following natural
resources, petroleum, fish, and timber. The land was broken out
in the following percentiles, 6% arable land; 5% permanent crops;
18% permanent pastures; 56% forests and woodland; and 15% other.
