PERU
Peru is located in Western South
America, bordering the South Pacific Ocean, between Chile and
Ecuador.
The geographical coordinates are
10 00 S, 76 00 W and on a map it may be referenced with South
America. The total area of this beautiful Latin American country
is approximately 1,285,220 sq. km and is divided up into 1.28
million sq. km land, and 5,220 sq. km water.
Peru is slightly smaller than Alaska.
Its coastline equals 2,414 km, and the border it shares with five
other countries, is approximately 6,940 km. It shares its borders
with Bolivia (900 km), Brazil (1,560 km), Chile (160 km), Colombia
(2,900 km), and Ecuador (1,420 km). Peru shares control
of Lago Titicaca, world's highest navigable lake, with Bolivia.
The country's climate varies, from
tropical in the east to dry desert in the west. The country's
terrain includes western coastal plain (costa), high and rugged
Andes in center (sierra), and eastern lowland jungle of Amazon
Basin (selva). Elevation extremes range from the lowest point,
(Pacific Ocean), which is at sea level, to the highest point (Nevado
Huascaran) 6,768 m above sea level. As of 1993, had the following
natural resources, copper, silver, gold, petroleum, timber, fish,
iron ore, coal, phosphate, and potash.
